What's in Your Household Cleaner?

Did you know that most households contain over 62 toxins within the home? Of these 62 toxins, did you know most can be found in cleaning products? As consumers, we all just assume that the products we are using are safe but when you turn your bottle over to find the words "toxic to humans and animals" it makes you wonder.

Many household cleaners contain more than one toxic chemical that is deemed "safe for use in small quantities." Over years of use, how safe can it really be?

Over the next few weeks, we will dive into the top contributors of Toxins in household cleaners. We will also discuss how healthy swaps clean and disinfect just as well if not better!

Ingredients to Avoid

Did you know that companies are not required to disclose what is in their "fragrance" due to proprietary laws? Meaning, most of the time you will not actually find the word phthalate on the back of your bottle because it is hiding behind the "fragrance" label.

Phthalates are a nasty chemical known to be an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors are things that are known to cause problems with your hormones. In turn, these hormone disruptions can cause other health issues the longer the exposure occurs.

How do you avoid phthalates? Products that are fragrance-free or infused with 100% essential oils are a much safer and healthier option.

Quarternary Ammonium Compounds (QUATS) are labeled as "Alkyl" or "Benzyl" on many household disinfectant products. These are a type of antimicrobial that actually do more harm than good. They are known to be triggers for respiratory issues, skin irritants and AGAIN endocrine disruptors.

So, how do you avoid QUATS? luckily, its easy. Simply look for the active ingredient of the product which is required to be listed. If you see any of the names listed below, the product contained QUATS.

  • Benzalkonium chloride
  • Dioctyldimethylammonium chloride
  • Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides (C12-16)
  • Alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (C12-14)
  • Alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chlorides (C12-18)
  • Benzethonium chloride
  • Didecyldimethylammonium chloride
  • Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (C14 60%, C16 30%, C12 5%, C18 5%)

Known for its streak-free properties, this nasty chemical wrecks havoc on lungs. Though it leaves a streak free shine on surfaces, the fumes linger after cleaning continuing to affect lungs long after use.
