| Flashback to the '20s: Slang |
|
|
It's surprising how many slang terms from the 1920's are still in common use! Here are a few to brush up on, plus some you might not have heard before! - Applesauce: Nonsense! See also: baloney, hooey, horsefeathers, piffle
- Beat it: get lost, leave
- Bearcat: a fierce and fiery woman
- Bee's Knees: something that's terrific. Similar phrases include the cat's meow, the eel's hips, the monkey's eyebrows, etc.
- Berries: Like “the bee’s knees,” something that's "berries" is GREAT! “That sounds like berries to me!”
- Blind Pig: a speakeasy or other establishment where one could illegally obtain alcohol. Also called a juice joint.
- Bunny: someone who seems lost, but endearingly so. "Poor little bunny!"
- Cast a kitten or to have kittens: to have a fit or get really worked up. "If my mother sees me in this dress, she'll have kittens."
- Choice bit of calico: a desirable lady
- Dewdropper: a lazy slacker who sits around all day
- Dolled up, dressed to the nines, togged to the bricks: all dressed up and looking GOOD!
- Egg: a person who lives the big life, an extravagent lifestyle
- Fire Extinguisher or Alarm Clock: the chaperone
- Get a Wiggle On: get moving, get going
- Goofy: in love 🥰
- Handcuff: engagement ring
- Hard-boiled: a tough guy
- Hen Coop: a beauty salon
- Hit on All Sixes: to perform at 100%
- Hotsy-totsy: attractive, pleasing to the eye
- Iron one’s shoelaces: to excuse oneself for the restroom
- Moll: a gangster's girlfriend
- “Now you’re on the trolley!”: “Now you’ve got it right!”
- Owl: someone who stays out late
- Rag-a-muffin: a disheveled or untidy person
- Razz: To tease or make fun of
- Ritzy: in high style, like the Ritz Hotel in Paris
- Sap: a fool or idiot
- Sheba: a sexually desirable woman
- Stilts, Gams: legs
- Swanky, Swell: good, elegant, classy
- Wise Guy: a person who thinks they are SO clever
- Vamp: an aggressive flirt or seductive person
- Zozzled: Inebriated. See also bent, blotto, burning with a blue flame, lit up like the commonwealth, on a toot, ossified, pie-eyed... there's certainly no shortage of 20s slang for having had too much to drink! 😅
