1920s Fashion Beyond Flappers |
When we think of 1920s fashion, the first thing that comes to mind for most people will be the dramatic fringed flapper dresses. While these certainly were en vogue, especially for evening wear, the day and afternoon dresses worn more commonly had a greater variety in style. The defining shape of 1920s women’s fashion was long and straight. Details like dropped waists, long necklaces, and vertical pleats helped add to the effect and lengthen the silhouette. Knits and blouses were commonly mixed and matched with straight or pleated skirts for a smart look, sometimes with a loose-fitting cardigan over the top. Afternoon dresses were usually straight-cut shift dresses that skimmed the figure rather than accentuating the waist like styles of previous decades.
Trying to replicate a 20s silhouette with modern fashions? Look for a dropped waist or side-draped dress with sleeves, and consider ordering a size up to create the looser fit and straighter silhouette reminiscent of the 20s.
